Dr. Tomoko Takano

Dr. Takano is a nephrologist at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), a Professor of Medicine at McGill University, and a Senior Scientist at the Research institute of the MUHC. Dr. Takano’s research focuses on the pathogenesis of proteinuria and nephrotic syndrome and her work in podocyte biology is internationally recognized. She is also active in-patient care and teaching at all levels. She served as the Chair of the CSN Scientific Committee (2016-2020) and the Local Organizing Working Group for the WCN 2021 (Montreal). She is also one of the founding members of the network of Canadian fundamental kidney researchers (CKD-N) and advocates the role of discovery research in nephrology.

Dr. Rita Suri

Dr. Suri is a nephrologist, Associate Professor and Director of the Division of Nephrology at McGill University. She is actively engaged in clinical practice, teaching, and research, and is nationally recognized for her leadership in research, network development, and teaching. Dr. Suri is a CIHR-funded clinical researcher and FRQS Junior 2 research scholar with > 70 publications and 5 book chapters. Her research interests are in clinical trials of dialysis, dialysis prescription, and adequacy of dialysis. She has served on multiple Guidelines Committees for the CSN, KDOQI, and KDIGO. She is also a Scientific Officer for the CIHR Randomized Controlled Trials panel and the Kidney Foundation Grants Committee, and a member of the CIHR Advisory Board for the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health. Dr. Suri is an active member in the Canadian Society of Nephrology. She has served on the Board of Director as Member at Large for Quebec, participated in several program planning initiatives and committees for the Society, including the World Congress of Nephrology local organizing committee, and had delivered many lectures at the CSN pre-course. Her other accomplishments include Chair and founder of the Canadian Nephrology Trials Network.

Dr. Claudio Rigatto is a kidney specialist and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Manitoba, as well as a Research Scientist and Academic Director at the Chronic Disease Innovation Centre. Dr. Rigatto is a recognized expert in biomarkers, point-of-care lab testing, telemonitoring and risk prediction in kidney disease. His current work is focused on using digital health technology to help patients safely and confidently treat and monitor their kidney disease at home.  As a researcher, he has published over 200 peer reviewed articles, has presented at numerous national and international meetings, and has held leadership positions in various academic and health care institutions and networks. As a strong advocate of patient centered care, he is committed to working with all sectors of society to achieve a more patient centred health care system.

Jay Hingwala is a Nephrologist and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Manitoba and serves as the Medical Director of the Home Hemodialysis and Transitional Dialysis Care at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. He completed his clinical training in Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba, followed by subspecialty training in Nephrology at the University of Toronto. He has also completed a Master of Science Degree in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto, where he now also holds a faculty cross appointment. His research interests focus on quality improvement interventions that improve care of patients that are transitioning onto chronic dialysis.   

 

He grew up in the Winnipeg and has many strong roots to the prairie community. Through the years, he has gained extensive experience in working on committees and in previous elected council positions within the University, with key successes including initiatives to foster collaborations with stakeholders and industry, creating future visions and strategies, and improving the financial positions of the organizations.  His nephrology quality improvement work includes innovative initiatives in transitional care for chronic dialysis, growing home dialysis, reducing medication administration errors in hemodialysis, , streamlining virtual ambulatory renal care, and establishing key performance indicators.. He also serves of the Canadian Nephrology Quality Improvement and Implementation Science Collaborative (CSN-QUIS).

Dr. David Clark is a nephrologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He received his MD at the University of Ottawa and completed Internal Medicine and Nephrology residency training at Dalhousie University as well as a clinical fellowship in Home Dialysis and MSc of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Western University. He is the current Medical Lead for the Halifax Home Dialysis & Percutaneous Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Insertion Programs, as well as the Program Director for the Home Dialysis Fellowship Training Program. He conducts clinical research within his interest areas of home dialysis & interventional nephrology and is an active member of the Kidney Research Institute of Nova Scotia. He is also a member of the CSN Scientific and Clinical Practice Guidelines Committees.

Dr. Mark Courtney graduated medical school University of Ottawa 1995 and completed internal medicine and nephrology training at the University of Alberta. Dr. Courtney has a Masters degree in patient safety from Imperial College London and is the program director for the nephrology residency training program at the University of Alberta. His research interest is in virtual care outcomes and improving access to nephrology consultation.

Dr. Varun Dev is a Staff Nephrologist and Medical Lead at Humber River Hospital in Toronto, Ontario. He completed his Masters in Health Administration at the University of Toronto and his interests include quality improvement and physician leadership. He is the Secretary and Treasurer of the Board of the Ontario Association of Nephrologists, and has been involved in creating and delivering leadership curriculums at the graduate, postgraduate and national level. He is also an active consultant, advisor, and investor in early-stage healthcare technology companies.

Tamara Glavinovic is a Nephrologist at the University of Ottawa and has a clinical focus in reproductive health in kidney disease and quality improvement. Having grown up in Montreal, she completed her medical degree at McGill University followed by Internal Medicine training at the University of Manitoba and Nephrology at the University of Toronto. She then completed a fellowship in glomerulonephritis at Monash Health Centre, Melbourne, Australia, along with advanced training in pregnancy and kidney disease at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center. She completed a Master’s in Public Health with a focus on quality improvement as well as a Master’s in Clinical Education through the University of Melbourne.

Dr. Rémi Goupil is a nephrologist at the Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal and an associate clinical professor at the Université de Montréal. He is a FRQS Junior 2 clinician-scientist focusing on optimising blood pressure measurements and hypertension management. His research program is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Kidney Foundation, the Heart + Stroke Foundation and the Société québécoise d'hypertension artérielle. For his achievements, he has received several awards, such as the Young Nephrologist Award from the Société québécoise de Néphrologie (2022) and New Investigator awards from the Canadian Society of Nephrology (2020) and the Société québécoise d'hypertension artérielle (2022).

Dr Tyrone Harrison MD PhD is an assistant professor of Medicine at the University of Calgary, where he works as a health services researcher and nephrologist. His current research program is mainly focused on integrating person-centredness within risk prediction strategies and population-based cohort studies for people with chronic diseases. His work is funded by the Kidney Foundation of Canada, and he is currently supported by a KRESCENT New Investigator Award (2023-2026). He is the current Chair of the CSN clinical practice guidelines committee. As part of the guidelines committee work, he has interest in incorporating the perspectives of people with lived experience and other stakeholders in determining committee priorities.

Dr. Kaushal completed his medical school and Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Manitoba, followed by Nephrology and Hypertension Subspecialty training at the University of Toronto. He was the Eliot Phillipson Clinician Educator Training Program fellow at the University of Toronto from 2015-2017. During this time, he completed a fellowship at the Wilson Centre for Research in Education, and M.Sc. in Health Practitioner Teacher Education. He is a Clinician Teacher, Education Site Coordinator for Nephrology, and Associate Program Director – Nephrology Fellowships at University of Toronto. His clinical interests include hypertension, dialysis, and living kidney donation. His educational interests include developing new curricular innovations including simulation, with a focus on how to tackles situations of uncertainty.

Dr. Lisa Miller received her MD at Memorial University of NL, then completed her internal medicine and nephrology training at Queens University.  She is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba and a clinical nephrologist with Shared Health Manitoba and received her certificate in Healthcare Leadership through the University of Toronto.  Dr. Miller is an active member of the Canadian Society of Nephrology, previously co-leading the development of the CSN Vascular Access Curriculum.  She is currently an active member of the CSN Guidelines Committee and is leading the Choosing Wisely Canada Nephrology update.  Her clinical and research interests include vascular access, hemodialysis outcomes, and quality improvement in chronic kidney disease and hemodialysis.  She is involved with multiple patient care and advocacy committees, including a core member of the Conservative Kidney Management Committee.

Dr Danielle Moorman is a community nephrologist in Ottawa providing outpatient care across the region and inpatient care at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. Prior to attending medical school in Ireland she completed a Master’s in Cellular and Molecular Medicine examining a mouse model of CKD. She returned to Ottawa for her Internal Medicine training and attended Queen’s University for her Nephrology training. She completed an additional fellowship in Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease and Conservative Kidney Care at The Ottawa Hospital.

Kristen Pederson completed her medical school at the University of Calgary, pediatric residency at Memorial University of Newfoundland and pediatric nephrology residency at the University of Toronto. She has been working at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital since 2003. Her clinical interests are CKD and dialysis in children and renal-rheumatological diseases. She is an associate professor at the Max Rady School of Medicine and has been a program director for Pediatric Nephrology. She is currently the President for the Canadian Association of Pediatric Nephrology.

Dr. Samanta received her medical degree at McGill University, did her nephrology training at the University of Alberta, then completed a clinical fellowship in Glomerulonephritis at the University of Toronto. She obtained a master’s degree in science in Clinical Epidemiology at Yale University. Once she joined on staff at McGill University, Dr Samanta started the GlomeruloNephritis Clinic at the MUHC, and serves as the nephrology liaison for the monthly joint Rheum-Nephro Lupus clinic.  She is involved in various clinical trials and is the McGill co-investigator for the GN arm of the Can-SOLVD CKD network. Dr Samanta also organizes and moderates the monthly McGill NephroPathology Rounds, which broadcast to various hospital sites across Quebec.  She is a member of the McGill Kidney Biospecimen Access Committee, and has also worked in conjunction with NephCure, a charitable organization devoted to patients with glomerular diseases, to organize the first Montreal-based patient conference to heighten patients’ understanding of glomerular disease and treatment opportunities.

Samuel Silver is an Associate Professor in the Division of Nephrology at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He completed his clinical training in internal medicine and nephrology at the University of Toronto. He holds a Master of Science in quality improvement and patient safety and completed the Veteran Affairs Quality Scholars program at the University of California-San Francisco. Samuel then trained as a research fellow at Stanford University, with a focus on health services research. Samuel has received salary support through the Kidney Research Scientist Core Education and National Training (KRESCENT) program, as well as funding from CIHR, the Kidney Foundation of Canada, and Ontario Renal Network. The objective of his research program is to use administrative data and systematic reviews to inform the design of quality improvement interventions that may improve patient outcomes, with a focus on patients with acute kidney injury and patients receiving in-centre hemodialysis.

Dr. Stigant is a mother, gardener, educator, and climate activist via the development and practice of environmentally sustainable kidney care.  She completed her nephrology training at the University of Toronto then obtained a Master of Health Science degree in epidemiologic research in CKD as recipient of a Kidney Foundation of Canada biomedical fellowship.  She conceived and delivers the undergraduate UBC medicine lecture 'The climate crisis, planetary health, and medical practice - a call to action'.  She is co-chair of the Planetary Health and Climate Change Steering Committee at Island Health, a co-investigator with UBC Planetary Healthcare Lab to study the environmental impact of kidney therapies, and inaugural chair of the Sustainable Nephrology Action Planning 'SNAP' Committee of the Canadian Society of Nephrology.  She is inaugural medical lead of BC Renal's innovative Planetary Health initiative, and a collaborator with CASCADES Canada in the development of sustainable kidney care resources funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada.  Dr. Stigant is proud to represent the CSN in the 'GREEN-K' (Global Environmental Evolution in Nephrology and Kidney Care) initiative of the ISN, and currently serves as co-chair of its Procurement, Infrastructure, and Innovation work-stream.   An enduring vision is the alignment of medical practice with planetary health principles.

Dr. Walsh obtained his MD in 2001, completed internal medicine in 2005, Nephrology training in 2006 and a MSc in Community Health Science in 2008 all at the University of Calgary. He then trained in lupus and vasculitis in Cambridge, UK as KRESCENT fellow until 2009, followed by a PhD in Health Research Methods at McMaster University until 2014 under a RCT Mentorship Award from CIHR. He is now an Associate Professor of Medicine (Nephrology) and Health Research Methods, Evidence & Impact at McMaster University, medical director of the Glomerulonephritis Clinic and the director of the Clinical Nephrology Research Group at St. Joseph’s Healthcare, and Scientist at the Population Health Research Institute where he leads research investigating treatments for patients with kidney diseases with particular interests in glomerular diseases, vasculitis, symptoms of kidney failure, and cardiovascular complications of kidney diseases.
