About The Award

Dr. Dimitrios Oreopoulos was a pioneer, a mentor, a friend. A nephrologist whose work improved the lives of countless people living with kidney disease. Dr. Oreopoulos is best remembered for his work in developing peritoneal dialysis as a successful home-based therapy for hundreds of thousands of end stage kidney disease patients worldwide and for all his associated research studies.

He was also a wonderful mentor and teacher who delighted in educating and helping young nephrologists who came to train at his centre in Toronto from countries all over the world. Dr Oreopoulos was also a humanitarian, and an ethically conscious compassionate doctor who understood that patients have spiritual as well as physical needs.

The Oreopoulos Memorial Lecture in Home Dialysis Therapies aims to further his work by advancing ongoing knowledge, discussion, and exchange on this topic by nephrologists.

CSN continues to advance medical knowledge and patient care through an annual symposium at the CSN Annual General Meeting focusing on the general topic area "Advances in Home Dialysis – Linking new technological innovation and evidence to change". With the collaboration of Baxter Healhtcare, CSN continues to honour Dr Oreopoulos by inviting the Memorial Lecture to be given by distinguished nephrologists who are holistically focused on Home Dialysis Therapies, including topics such as advances in our understanding of those therapies, the development of new technologies to deliver them, and how they can be provided in a patient centered, compassionate manner.
